What an amazing story about how things use to be and...what a beautiful valley. Younger people today will be amazed at how life was 'way back then!' Great book to share.
Having grown up in Shady Valley, where I still maintain a strong connection, I am truly impressed with the vivid descriptions and great detail included in "The Live and Times of Darrell Brinkley." The book is beautifully written and a true anthology of country life and the many challenges faced by early settlers. A must read for anyone with ties to country living. -- Kathleen Blevins Britts
I have to say I was experiencing numerous back to my childhood moments while reading this fantastic book. My early life experiences paralleled Darrell Brinkley’s on so many levels while growing up in Germany during the war. Examples include the kitchen stove going day and night for heating and cooking, straw filled beds, an outhouse, no indoor plumbing/refrigeration or washer and dryer to name a few. To summarize, I really enjoyed reading this delightful easy to read book. I highly recommend it!
As luck would have it I was in Shady Valley during the annual Cranberry Festival and got to meet Darrell. He is a wonderful man. This is a great book for someone who wants to learn the history of Shady Valley, TN and hear from someone who has lived before all of our modern conveniences were invented. It is fascinating. Reading this makes me appreciate how unimportant 'stuff' is and teaches me there is so much more to life. Thank you Darrell for sharing your most interesting journey with us!

Very interesting and refreshing story. Really enjoyed reading it.
I enjoyed the book as I was born and raised in Shady Valley. I lived in "lower Shady" and Darrell lived in "upper" Shady. He married one of my high school classmates.
